Some emails you don’t want to miss.

And since most people’s inboxes are flooded with messages…

And email service providers like Google and Outlook will occasionally mistake legit emails as spam…

Important, don’t-wanna-emails have a tendency to get missed.

A lot.

Well, we can’t help you with your overcrowded inbox (that’s a topic for a different blog post), but we can help ensure emails you want aren’t accidentally banished to your junk folder.

How?

By showing you how to “whitelist” them.

What is a Whitelist?

A whitelist allows senders or domains to bypass spam filters and deliver emails straight to your inbox.

Want to prioritize messages from your boss or favorite blog?

Want to make sure you get that can’t-miss newsletter each week? Or updates on the course, product, or game you purchased?

Well, when you add their email address or domain to your whitelist, your email service provider gives them VIP access to your inbox.

If it sounds like technical mumbo jumbo, don’t worry…

We’ll show you how to do it for all the popular email service providers, step by step.

And we’ll start with the biggest one…

How to Whitelist an Email in Gmail

If you’re a Gmail user, you’ll need to sign in on your desktop to access your whitelist.

Then follow these 9 steps:

  1. Log in to your Gmail account.
  2. Select settings in the top corner of the screen.
  3. Click the see all settings button.
  4. Locate the Filters and Blocked Addresses setting.
  1. Click the create new filter button.
  2. Enter the email address of the sender you want whitelisted.
  3. Click on create filter at the bottom of the screen.
  4. Select the ‘Never send it to Spam’ setting.
  1. Create the filter.

How to Whitelist an Email in Yahoo

There are multiple ways to create a whitelist in Yahoo Mail, but creating a ‘contact’ is the simplest option.

Here’s what you want to do:

  1. Open your inbox or spam folder and locate the desired email address.
  2. If it’s in spam, bring it to your inbox by selecting the message and clicking on the move button in the upper-middle corner of your screen.
  3. Select the email by ticking the checkbox.
  4. Find the three-dot icon at the top of your Home Screen.
  5. Click ‘add sender to contacts’.
  1. Insert the sender’s name and email address in the contact box.
  2. Save the contact.

How to Whitelist an Email in Outlook

Microsoft Outlook allows you to view your whitelist as you add new email addresses.

To get started you should:

  1. Sign in to your Microsoft email account.
  2. Copy the desired sender’s email address.
  3. Click on the home tab
  4. Select the junk icon.
  1. Find the junk email options.
  2. Click on the safe sender’s tab.
  3. Paste the email address from Step 2.
  4. Click the OK button.

How to Whitelist an Email in Apple Mail

Apple Mail doesn’t allow you to bookmark a contact; instead, you can mark an email as ‘not junk’.

Here’s how you do it:

  1. Select the mailboxes icon.
  2. Click on junk.
  3. Select the email you want to whitelist.
  4. Swipe from right to left on the email until you see three icons.
  1. Click on the dots and select ‘Move to Inbox’.

How to Whitelist an Email in AOL

Creating a whitelist in AOL Mail is similar to Yahoo. You’re essentially adding a contact to a safe senders list.

All you need to do is:

  1. Find the email in either your spam or inbox.
  2. Click the email address of the sender email.
  3. Fill in the first namelast name, and address of the contact.
  1. Fill out the information on your New Contact.
  2. Click Add Contact.

How to Whitelist an Email in Zoho Mail

If you have Zoho and AOL, you’ll be happy to know that the process is exactly the same!

Just like with AOL Mail, you’ll need to:

  1. Find a contact that you want to whitelist.
  2. Open up the email.
  3. Click on the name or email address of the sender.
  4. Fill in the New Contact’s information.
  1. Save the contact to your list.

How to Whitelist an Email in ProtonMail

Like Gmail, ProtonMail allows you to customize your filters so you only see the most relevant content.

Follow these instructions to get started:

  1. Go to your inbox.
  2. Click on the setting gear icon on the top right-hand side of the screen.
  3. Select the Go to settings option.
  4. Click the filters button.
  1. Find the Spam, Block, and Allow List.
  2. Click Add address or domain.
  3. Select the Allow option.
  1. Enter the email of the sender you want to whitelist.

How to Whitelist an Email Using IP (Internet Protocol)

Not every email provider lets you filter your mail based on IP addresses.

However, Gmail has a quick system that is easy to follow.

This is what you do:

  1. Log in to your Google Admin Console account.
  2. Click the nine-dot icon and select Gmail.
  3. Select the setting button.
  4. Find the Spam, Phishing, and Malware setting.
  5. Choose the Email allowlist button.
  6. Add any IP addresses you want to whitelist.
  7. Click the save button.

Now, Go Forth and Whitelist

By following the steps provided above, you can help ensure the emails you actually care about end up where they belong…

In your inbox.

Happy whitelisting.
